Instructions for water protection for tent

When you're in the middle of wildlife, one of the most natural sounds you won't want to hear is the sound of the water dripping inside your tent. If you've encountered this situation, now is the time to start working on improving your tent's water resistance.

Here are three ways to waterproof a tent:

  • Sealing seams: Apply wax sealing to prevent liquid from overflowing.
  • Refreshing urethane coatings: Coatings from urethane on the inside of the tent and tent floors are the main defensive layers that prevent moisture from coming in.
  • Refreshing the DWR layer: A waterproof DWR coating will give your tent umbrella the ability to float away water.

Close the seam in the tent

Many types of tents have sealed seams since you bought them, but the sealant may disappear over time, allowing water to leak.

If you find a punctured seam, here's what you'll need:

  • A rag
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Sealants (make sure you use the ones that are right for your tent. Fabrics with silicone coating will need a different sealant than polyurethane cover fabrics. Most tents use polyurethane, But if you're not sure what material your tent is made from, check with the manufacturer.)
  • A pad to permeate if fluid spills (optional)
  • Set up a tent in a dry, sunny place or in a bright room so you can review all seams. You will seal the seams under the tent and the inside of the tent. It is helpful to turn the tent upside down so that stitches are easier to handle.
  • If you find that the seam tape under the tent is loose, gently remove the peeled pieces, but keep the normal parts.
  • Prepare the seams by gently wiping them with a rag and rubbing alcohol.
  • Apply sealant layer on seam.
  • If one seam is already open, the rest may also be in the same situation in the near future, so you should apply sealant on all the seams.

Refresh the Urethane coating on the tent

If you notice peeling off on the tent or on the floor of the tent, it's time to add a new urethane coating.

Here are the things you will need:

  • A sponge has a rough surface
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Sealants (again, make sure you use the ones that are right for your tent. Fabrics with silicone coating will need a different sealant than polyurethane cover fabrics. covered with polyurethane, but if you're not sure what material your tent is made from, check with the manufacturer.)

Here's how to apply a sealant to the tent:

  • Spread the umbrella and / or tent floor down and gently scrub the peeled off with rubbing alcohol and sponge.
  • Apply a thin layer of new sealant to the entire umbrella or tent floor, following the instructions printed on the bottle.
  • Let the new coating dry for at least 24 hours before putting the tent away.
  • To minimize exposure to fire retardant chemicals, wash your hands before working with covered tent fabric.

Refresh the DWR layer on the tent

If your tent is no longer able to make raindrops, you can renew a durable waterproof coating (DWR).

Here is what you will need:

  • Water spray, such as Nikwax Tent and Gear SolarProof
  • A clean wet towel
  • Water

Here's how to use a water spray:

  • Set up the tent and spray the tent with clean water (if you've just cleaned the tent, you don't need to wait for the tent to dry before adding a new layer of DWR.)
  • Apply a water-proof spray over the outside surface of the tent.
  • After a few minutes, remove the excess coating with a clean wet towel.
  • Allow the tent to dry completely before placing the tent again.
